Bill Brownstein: Concert organizers want us all to give peace a chance

“We want to raise awareness that peace is not a luxury,” says Jennifer Boire, left, who is organizing Montreal’s second annual Concert for Peace with Berthe Provencher, centre, and Sonja Ball.

MONTREAL — A little over 45 years ago, John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their second Bed-In for Peace at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Along with the likes of Tommy Smothers, Dick Gregory and Allen Ginsberg, among an array of guests in their suite, Lennon and Ono recorded Give Peace a Chance.

Montreal singer Sonja Ball was not part of the recording session, but the song’s message resonated at the time and continues to do so.

Last year, Ball was at the forefront of staging Montreal’s first Concert for Peace at the Hudson Music Festival. This year, Ball, with partners Jennifer Boire and Berthe Provencher, has expanded the concept and moved the concert to the city.

Let’s Rock for Peace, the second annual Concert for Peace, takes place Thursday at 8 p.m. at Lion d’Or.
